Jiu jitsu always asks us to seek advantage before attacking. There are many different forms of advantage. They all have their good and bad points but they're all much better than just attacking when you feel like it. train your mind to attack in two stages – preliminary advantage first, the actual attack second. It's much easier to penetrate a partially broken defense than a prepared defense. Study the relevant forms of advantage – positional, timing, balance/kuzushi, grip – the list is long but the spirit is always the same. Develop some favorites and apply them prior to your attacks and you'll soon find that defenses that used to seem impenetrable to you are suddenly something you can reliably breach
