The earlier you start, the better you do: So often we approach lackadaisically toward an opponent and get to grips before we start making decisions as to what we are going to do. This is fine if you're sparring some well beneath your level or if you're in a more relaxed training mode, but in a more competitive situation you must start before you even begin contact. Even as you approach your opponent you should be scanning for openings and formulating a plan of attack. This way your first contact is made with a sense of DIRECTION AND PURPOSE – the hallmark of all effective action, including Jiu jitsu.
