Most of the moves associated with standing position are just as effective down on the ground: we often make a big distinction between standing grappling and ground grappling and there are certainly some very important differences – so much so that there are many grapplers who excel at one but are very uncomfortable in the other. Be aware however, that most of the major moves of the standing game world just as well down on the floor. Double legs, single legs, even throws such as uchi mata are very efficient in ground grappling. Some moves such as sumi gaeshi which are a big part of the jiu jitsu ground curriculum, also excel as standing throws. Yes, there are some big differences between standing and ground grappling – but there is a lot of overlap too. Use that overlap to gain confidence. If you're mostly a ground grappler, start using single legs and double legs and even throws down on the mat – as you start scoring with them and learning how to apply them on the floor where you're comfortable, it'll be easier to translate that into using them successfully on your feet
