If you can restrict the other fellows movement without limiting your own – you will win. If you connect too tightly to an opponent you will shut down his movement but at the cost of your own as well, thus giving you no real advantage. Obviously if you're too loosely connected your opponent will simply pull away from your attacks. The happy middle ground is to tightly connect to one important part of your opponent's body, perhaps the head/shoulders or the hips, but leave some slack elsewhere. This will enable you to restrict your opponent's movement but leave enough slack for your own body to move freely around the opponent's immobilized body.
